A new face and a revelation.
This Diffference-Maker collection has morphed over time and has led to a revelation to me. I collect picture books with illustrations I love and lately have been adding to this collection with books about artists, scientists, authors and compilations of women and/or black achievers. With a handful of exceptions, all of the persons I have highlighted were previously unknown to me. At the outset, I did not intend to only have women or people of color (although as it turns out this year would be the perfect year to do so,) but when I would search for “prospects,” I realized that I already knew about most men I found. But from the incredibly long list of WOMEN or BLACKS or INTERNATIONAL achievers ....well, my awareness of them was sparse to zero in my own Personal Head Encyclopedia. Does that say something about who we have typically or historically chosen to honor? I don’t know. I only pose the question. So, while I am quite aware of wonderful things being contributed and achieved by white guys from all centuries, they may have had their day in my sun already. So on to the amazing others who have achieved remarkable things, even if largely unknown to us.
